This channels contains three main types of vidoes;
- project related that are tied into activities I am involved in on different levels.
- hiking related videoes from some of all of my trips
- videos from old VHS tapes which is more for media archeologists than anything else. The nostalgy factor is probably pretty high there.
Furthermore, you will also find some music related videos on this channel, but they are few and far between.

Natural History Of An Alien On Sunday 6th July 1997 On BBC2.
Thanks for the info. I updated the description with the original aired date.
I was 12 😊
I still remember when I was 14 years old and watched this in a VHS that came with a magazine. Awesome to watch at the time! 😃
Sure - this came from a point in time when PCs were starting to gain traction, but it was difficult to predict just how they might impact society. Gates was pretty good at keeping up to date with transformative technology, but just as with Apple, DEC and several other companies, they had pretty much some hit and miss predictions. Some ideas came to fruition, but the technology was simply not mature enough for most of them. Later on things started to change - in particular with the advent of social media, but there has always been a bunch of obstacles in realizing the potential. Mainly pretty mundance stuff like standardisation issues, privacy regulations, protocols and capacity etc. But this video was a good example of how one could present a vision in a way that mainly car manufaturers used to do.
I have a name for that high gravity planet I’ve always given it the nickname of Titania (that’s a Starfox reference)
Heh ... at a somewhat unrelated note; high gravity planets (at least denser than the earth) seems to be the norm along planets in the goldilock zones. So rockplanets with liquid would most likely be the best place to start. I am still waiting for something to nickname one of these exoplanets Huyrule or Zelda. It is just a matter of time, I guess.
Europa scientific-wise has all the required trademarks for life to exist. I know they're planning missions there, but I would absolutely love to see actual alien life there
Yes - Europa has been on the top of the list of potential candidates for a long time. The moon share many interesting properties with tidal forces most likely heating up salt water in its interior, and many known components for life being present. Of course, a lot of guesswork remains, and there is very little likelyhood one of the planned missions will be able to detect any signs of life. Perhaps the presence of algae could be detected on ice-deposits being pushed up from the deep, but I doubt any of the onboard tools would be able to penetrate far beneath the crust. However, it will be interesting to see what we can gather from the mission.
@@flimmeren I've recently learned that Pluto's moon Charon is very similar to Europa and a large red spot on its icy surface could be organic material, according to nasa
@@SamuelBlack84 we just have to hope that life is really a common thing in the universe, i guess, since if it's not, two planets (or moons as well in this situation i guess) with life in one solar system would be pretty unlikely otherwise. but hoping is enough for me :)
Got see Jonas as part of the TRIO concert at the Bottom Line NYC - very enjoyable performance
Yes, he has always managed to work with skilled musicians, and is also very entertaining. I have developed a certain fondness for all of those hardworking entertainers and musicians that has gone under the radar. While travelling around visiting even the tiniest venues, they develop their craft. Truth to be told, Jonas Fjeld has been a house hold name for many years, but he is still hard at work up to this day. An extra tidbit: he lives just 15 - 20 km from me. The more you know.
One of my earliest memories is of the puds from this show.
They were cute 🙂

Love speculative evolution, I am glad it has a new momentum nowdays in popularity, and currently making my own project. Biology is surely among my many interests to study in the future, hopefully I may get a job around it.
Sure - this is a very interesting topic. One thing is the biochemistry, another thing is how it would impact behaviour mechanism and the ecosystem. Thinking back to the original Cosmos series where Carl Sagan played around with how creatures on a gaseous planet could evolve, how silicate beings could exist, how exotic particles could replace certain macromolecules etc. Well, truth to be told - most of the examples being used ends up being very farfetched and would not stand up to scrutiny since they would be too unstable. However, exchanging carbon with fluor could work, and there is also an option to include more basepairs. RNA do not necessarily have to look like what we are familiar with from terrestial lifeforms etc. Anyway - good luck with following up on this exciting topic!
Machine based life? I wonder how long they would life.
Machine based life is an extremely interesting topic. Isaac Arthur has had several episodes on this, and I have read about notable scientists that believe machine intelligence will be the next natural evolutionary step for all intelligent beings - unless they kill themself (as according to the fermi paradox formula). In a sense you can say we are already in a transitional phase here on planet earth. Running the risk of sounding a bit like Neil de grasse Tyson; it all started with the invention of writing. Suddenly we had the opportunity to transfer knowledge, thoughts and concepts from one person to another - even across centuries and millenias. Nowadays, the Internet has taken over that function all the while we are using mobile phones as almost extensions of ourself to communicate with other people in real time or checking vidoes of past events. Now - with the ascent of true AI, things will change on a number of levels. Just when that will happen is still uncertain, but the year 2040 has been predicted for a very long time - and I believe that is very realistic if you look at how technology has evolved. Of course - that does not indicate that machine based life would life forever, they would for instance probably be very suseptible to EMP - so cosmic radiation might actually be a big obstacle. However, their worldview and development would be drastically different from any other kind of organisms. So perhaps we will get a kind of answer to your questions within the forseeable future. At least I hope so!
Machine life could potentially live for a very long time as it isn't subject to the shortcomings of organic life
24:02 That's not why seasons happen, dude! The Northern Hemisphere experiences winter when the Earth is closer to the Sun, and North and South have opposite seasons. This is because the cause of our seasons is the planet's AXIAL TILT!
Good catch! That being said, I believe he might also have been thinking of planets with a much more pronounced orbital eccentricity than what the earth experience.
Damn... this is an awesome documentary. Yeah it's dated, but holy hell do we actually get some aliens and stuff!! Kinda wish it had a remake, if only for the graphics. Buy I actually think it's better as is.
Good point! It being dated make it look a bit more authentic in a way. That being said, if we look aside the from the dramaturgy of the episode, there are a number of other sources one could get for similar content today. Melodysheep has been mentioned several times, but there are many other examples out there. The challenge is however to imagine something that is truly alien. Not only something with tentacles and three eyes - but something that is outside of our experience. What would a being with a very different set of genes look like? How would the ecosystem function? If they had some kind of intelligence - how would it work? This film did make an attempt - but of course, it was still limited by what we know today. But it is as you say - at least we got some aliens!
Hallo-dame nostalgi💕
Definitivt nostalgi.
Ah, speculative evolution, it's come back was epic
So very true, mine star - the scriptwriter and director did a good job here. That nice little twist made also the program more memorable. It went from a speculative documentary to something that could have been part of the movie "Europa report" (check it out - its one of those hidden gems on the net). Actually, it could have been interesting to see what kind of alternative ecology a computer could generate with todays knowledge. Games like "No man sky" and "Subnautica" try to give some kind of examples. However, I do still find them too bound to rules and expectations from our carbon, G-class sun based ecology. This could be an interesting project for National Geographic to grab hold of. I recall Carl Sagan tried to envision what we could expect to find, and concluded with many of same aspects you can find in this program. Melodysheep did a very good job, though - and I do actually recommend his approach. If you haven't already, check out his "Life Beyond: Museum of Life" video(s).

Artig tilbakeblikk.
And in 2020, this video becomes a source of research by an incredible independent film maker of Life Beyond: Melodysheep.
Ah! Good point - this would have been excellent research material for Melodysheep! Who knows - he might already have checked this out for inspiration. He gives the impression of being very thorough in his preparations. A personal anecdote here; I first came across the term exobiology though the writings of the Finnish professor Nils Mustelin (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nils_Mustelin). His book "Life Among Billions of Stars, Civilizations in the Milky Way and Beyond?" was what opened my eyes for this branch of biology. A lot of things happened during the next few years. Carl Sagan popularised astronomy, biology - and dare I say philosophy? - in Cosmos. And in a brief moment of time, lasting less than a decade, most people were captivated by the world around us. "As an ape in awe before a door" to quote Nightwish. That fascination only lasted just a few years though. We need someone to pick up the mantle. Personally, I do not think Neil deGrasse Tyson really cut it. It think it is the humanism in the science that is somehow lacking. So from that perspective, I would think that Melodysheep in many ways could bring some necessary wonder back into the field. That being said; there is a big difference between being a good communicator and a good scientist. This particular video is an example of how to popularise a topic that otherwise would have been either too esoteric - or more related to old B-monster movies. So I dare say the producers did a pretty good job with this documentary, all things considered.
This is a ancient documentary in 2021 but This video is legendary
Heh - the graphics is a bit outdated now. But it is fun to see how they envisioned life might evolve under different circumstances. Exobiology is not a new field by any means - but there was a huge leap from making airbrushed illustrations in dusty textbooks to actually giving life to these concepts. One of the things I think worked well in this documentary is that the filmmakers actually included a kind of story. The ecosystem that was outlined was also very interesting and is probably what I found most intriguing. In some ways I guess you can say this is the true definition of science fiction; it is a story about what might have been if the conditions were somewhat different. The content is fictious biology but based on science.
He's right tho in this video but of course he's gonna be right he's literally been in power controlling the future of how we live life for like 30 years
chn
He brought in technology he knew the impact and power he would have and somewhere along the way became evil

You are very welcome, Titanlizard. I am aware the other version that is floating around. So here you go, thanks to the magic of forgotten VHS tapes - and that I finally got around to digitize some of them. These tapes contains a nice mix of old science shows and anime, and looking back at it I guess you can say I was kind of a nerd as a teenager. And still is, I hope. Sorry about the Norwegian subtitles though - there is unfortunately little I can do about that.

Wow. Why are there no longer shows like this?
Well - I guess it is not as much as there are't show such as this any more, but there are less resources put into animating and preparing the content. This particular program was for instance based on exobiology, which can be described as a somewhat speculative science. The concept of how life could evolve based on common building blocks is not exact in any way. Even if we are talking about normal carbon based lifeforms, there is no way of knowing what elements could influence the entire biodiversity and ecosystem. If we then change carbon with for instance silicon or fluor - well, your guess is as good as mine. There are many good RUclips channels that focus science and technology, knowledge and general updates on research being conducted. The trouble is of course that these channels are operating on a shoestring budget and can hardly be classified as professional in any way. Some, like for instance some of the vsauce productions may be semiprofessional - but you will not find the resources that for instance BBC and other large network puts into their productions. And that is the core of the issue, I think. That being said - there are a lot of both fun and interesting productions being made today, but the different channels usually offers a fragmented profile that makes it hard to find anything of interest. Of course National Geographic channel and History Channel are have clearly defined target groups - but usually offers a lot of reruns. So, even though I am critical to certain aspects of RUclips - I do also believe that the ability to search for keywords and find old gems like this show, may be a valuable asset for future users and media archeologists.
Look up "Life Beyond".
Thank you for the tip. If it is the game "Life Beyond" you refers to, then it seems to have been in the works since at leat 2018. I did not find any reference to procedural generation of lifeforms there, but there might be something else planned. If you referred to "Life Beyond" by Melodysheep, then I agree - that is a must-see. Especially now that Episode 3 will be released now in November (I am writing this in September btw.)
There's barely anything science related on TV anymore, just endless recycled crap like Love Island. The whole schedule on every channel is reality garbage
Well, it cost less to produce reality shows. It is only the larger studios that can afford investing in something with such high production costs. Quite frankly, when I want to check out interesting documentaries these days, I rather check out streaming services like CuriosityStream og something from National Geographic. BBC and ITV used to have a lot, but the cost has risen so much that almost everything needs to be coproductions. But in general, the quality science productions seems to have been reduced. You can instead find minor productions, like Being Human on Nebula and similar - but of course, these can not compare to anything like the stuff for instance CBS produce.
Ahhh nostalgia..
Yes, indeed. I do not miss those days, but there are a lot of fun memories to look back on. It was generally speaking a bit more optimistic attitude back then. We all tend to be more jaded today. We kind of expect for technology to proceed at an ever-increasing rate, and is not so easily impressed by neither graphic nor speed. And interestingly enough - I believe we have grown way to lax when trying to overcome technical limitations anymore. At least not on standard platforms. These things are of course different within the IoT field, but I still have beefs with all the people promoting OOP instead of optimizing function calls based on the number of CPI instructions being triggered. But we are now over into nerd territory, so I'll let that rest for now. Anyway - fun memories!
28:53 hockeysveis i 1995?
Im not completely satisfied with Intro . . . . mmmmm !!
Well, I believe he is keeping more or less the ambience from the previous track (which is not included here) while using some of the typical trademarks from Tangerine Dream. That is just my guess though. It may also be his way of "cheating" and fill in gaps with sound, while other sequencers are being triggered. I do of course not know - he has not really put out many videoes where you touches upon these topics.
Not bad! Sounds as good as the original!
KEBU does a very good job here for a number of reasons; the arrangement is very accurate and the soundscape is close to the original (allthough there is nothing wrong with person interpretations). Furthermore - from what I can see, he is using several analogue synths that at times can be moody - at least when they are at the road and all this is controlled with either midi or timed with pulses which can be pretty tongue in cheek. Also - even if he is using a lot of sequencers here, it is still a live performance - and there is no doubt he is very skilled at juggling all the different settings and triggering the necessary presents. Darn impressive work! Kudos to KEBU.
